In addition to the society’s excellent raised track catering for 2½, 3½ and 5 inch gauge, there are 13 passenger trucks and 4 engines which members can use, subject to being approved drivers in the appropriate categories. All members are encouraged to undertake the training to achieve driver status and fully enjoy the facilities available.

Of the 13 trucks, 8 are double coupled and having a safety links to ensure passenger safety. The remaining are single units which can be coupled to any double unit but are primarily used for running with the smaller gauge locomotives to cater for the driver and a couple of passengers. Two are a single seater for driver use only.

The club locomotives consist of a 0-4-0 tank steam engine “Puffer” in 5 inch gauge, which was donated to the club many years ago, but is in excellent working order and used regularly for passenger hauling, as well as training drivers on steam engine operations . The other three engines are electric powered, all 5 inch gauge, which are recharged using our solar power system.

The Society takes effective maintenance and safety as a prime function in our running operations. Maintenance of the track, truck and engines is assigned to specific members who take responsibility of these activities and seek where appropriate gain the assistance of other club members to carry out the work to ensure they are fit for purpose. Details of all maintenance are logged.

Visiting drivers must show appropriate certification and insurance in line with Northern Association of Model Engineers rules, along with signing into the club register showing arrival and departure times. Track Operations Log will also show locomotive type, trucks used and times. Our aim is to make you welcome and for visitors to enjoy our facilities.

Our trucks are available to visiting drivers and use a fixed steel link to the engines and visitors need to have a connecting point on their locomotive to cater for a 6mm pin. The club can provide the pin with locking clip. Before using the track or running their locomotive, a visitor is required to do a test run with a member of the club to show the layout of the track, signalling where appropriate, station operations and links to the steaming bays.
